It is similar to haiku and tanka, but it has five lines. It can be written about anything you like, with an emphasis on the syllable sounds of the words. It was invented by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/poets\/adelaide-crapsey\">Adelaide Crapsey<\/a>, an American poet, in the nineteenth century. The cinquain form has been used in other ways by Raymond Luber (1976) who adopted it for use in therapeutic work and bibliotherapy. I had a go at doing this very quickly for fun. The following two poems are the result:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Spring<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>April, May<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Buds are opening<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With sun, showers, birdsong<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Light.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Earth<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our life-blood<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Digging, sowing, planting<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seeds, growing, birth, death,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grounding.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>As you can see, this is very simple, just writing what came to me as I was preparing my \u201cPlanting the heart\u2019s inner garden\u201d workshop. It has given me wonderful prompts for writing. Cinquain poetry can work as a prompt to assist me in my fiction writing too when I\u2019m brainstorming as I can use nouns of any given subject or situation I want to write about.
